St Pauls Carnival postponed until September
14 June 2007
On the 14th of June 2007 the new voluntary board of St Pauls Carnival made the difficult decision to postpone St Pauls Carnival until Saturday 15 September, 2007.
St Pauls Carnival, like other large scale community events, struggled to deal with the new licensing laws and the rising cost of running events such is this now 40 year old carnival.
In light of these problems Bristol’s largest community event postponed the event until September, fully intending to return to its usual date in July in 2008.
Gene Joyner, Chair of the Carnival board, said “The Board have taken this step with real reluctance to postpone at this stage. However we are now even more determined to make Carnival happen this year, we need to do this knowing we have the licence and on as sound a financial footing as possible to secure the long term future of Carnival”
Pax Nindi, Artistic Director, said: “Carnivals all over the country are being affected by these pressures, but I know St Pauls will rise to meet the challenges. Looking at this positively, we now have more time to run community Mas camps, raise money from local business, get some volunteers working with us and book some more great acts.”
St Pauls Carnival’s two major funders, Bristol City Council and Arts Council England, as well as the new sponsor Bristol Alliance are supporting the event with increased financial and operational support.
